Portion Guide
How much meat per person?
For most adult meals, 200–250g per person is a solid guide.
That’s roughly:
- A generous steak
- 2–3 lamb chops (depending on size)
- 2 good sausages
- A hearty serving of mince in a pasta, curry or pie
When to adjust up or down
150–200g per person works well if:
- The meal includes beans, lentils or other protein
- You’re serving multiple courses
- It’s a rich cut (flat rib, pork belly)
- It's a child's portion
250–350g per person makes sense if:
- It’s a braai and meat is the main event
- You’re feeding big appetites
Bone-in vs boneless
Bone adds weight but isn’t edible. As a rough guide:
- Boneless cuts: 200–250g per adult
- Bone-in cuts: 300–400g per adult
For stews, curries and batch cooking
You can comfortably use 150–200g per person and stretch the dish with vegetables, pulses etc.
A note on quality
Properly raised, well fed animals produce meat that is richer and more satisfying. You often need less than you think. A smaller portion of excellent meat, cooked well, is far more satisfying than a large portion of average meat.
