Who Are We?

We’re Elly & Ben - Scarborough locals, dog lovers, wild-nature enthusiasts, and the humans behind Ethical Meats.
We started this business out of a deep love for animals (yes, even the ones we eat), and a strong belief that meat should come from animals who’ve lived well and been treated with care and respect. It's better for them, for the planet, and for all of us.
We live by the beach with our sandy, happy dogs, and we’re passionate about providing meat that aligns with our values: honesty, care, and deep respect for life and our planet. This is local food for local people, from people who truly care.


Where Our Meat Comes From

Our partnerships with trusted South African farms ensure that every cut we offer is traceable, sustainable, and produced with the utmost care for both animals and the environment.

Beef

  • Greenfields Farm, KwaZulu-Natal:
    Located near Mooi River in the KZN Midlands, Greenfields Farm has been raising free-range cattle since 1893.

    They adhere to the Greenfields Protocol, a self-imposed standard ensuring cattle graze naturally on pastures, with minimal supplementation during droughts or winter. This protocol emphasizes animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and the production of hormone-free, grass-fed beef.


  • Fairfields Farm, Napier, Western Cape:
    Fairfields Farm in Napier collaborates with Greenfields, following the same rigorous free-range and grass-fed protocols.

    This partnership ensures consistent quality and ethical standards across all our beef offerings.

Pork

  • Bio Bertie – Lowerland Farm, Prieska, Northern Cape:
    Lowerland is South Africa's only certified organic pork producer, holding European organic certification.

    Their pigs roam freely, spending 95% of their time outdoors, foraging in pumpkin fields, vineyards, and pecan orchards. The farm practices regenerative agriculture, focusing on soil health and biodiversity, ensuring that their pork is not only delicious but also environmentally sustainable.

Lamb

  • Karoo Meat of Origin Project:
    Our lamb predominantly comes from the Karoo region, certified under the Karoo Meat of Origin (KMOO) program.

    This certification guarantees that the lambs are free-range, grazing on indigenous Karoo vegetation, which imparts a unique flavour profile to the meat. The KMOO ensures full traceability from farm to table, upholding strict protocols for animal welfare and environmental stewardship.


  • Additional Lamb Sources:
    In cases of supply constraints, we source lamb from other trusted farms that strictly adhere to our established protocols, ensuring consistent quality and ethical standards.

Poultry

  • Various Local Farms:
    Our poultry is sourced from select local farms committed to free-range practices.

    Each farm is carefully vetted to ensure adherence to humane rearing methods, with regular inspections to maintain our high standards for animal welfare and product quality.

Game

  • Buffelshoek Farm, near Cradock, Eastern Cape:
    Buffelshoek is a game farm situated near the Mountain Zebra National Park.

    The farm is renowned for its diverse wildlife and commitment to sustainable game farming practices. Animals roam freely in their natural habitat, ensuring meat that is both ethically sourced and rich in flavour.
